It is hard for me to even comprehend the fact that it is the holiday season!! Here in the south, it’s been pretty warm so maybe that’s why I’m not totally in the holiday spirit yet. Even still, we made one of our favorite holiday recipes this week!!
I’m sure you’ve all seen the recipe on the back of Chex cereal. If you haven’t ever tried it, you should!! By the way…this recipe also goes by the name of puppy chow. That sounds real appetizing right??
My three have renamed it, Fluffy Clouds because of the powdered sugar.
I can’t tell you how many times I have made this recipe and really, the little boy in the picture below is the sole reason I even thought about making it. The original recipe calls for peanut butter. We use sunflower seed butter instead and it is DELICIOUS!! When I first started making this, it was perfect for him!! It was a high calorie and high protein snack that he would and could eat.
So grab a box of chex cereal (you can use the rice, wheat, or corn…really doesn’t matter), 1 cup of chocolate chips, 1/2 stick of butter, 1/2 cup of sunflower seed butter (or peanut butter) 1 teaspoon of vanilla (which I was out of this day) and 1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar.She wanted me to take her picture too!! And she got really up close and personal! I have so many pictures like this it’s not even funny. I need to get them all together. These two have always had a sweet relationship. I hope they are always this close.Ok….back to the recipe. Melt the butter, chocolate chips and sunflower seed butter and stir together.They were all sitting at the bar helping add the ingredients and anxiously awaiting the finished product.
They each had to have some of the chocolate chips.Gently stir the cereal around to make sure it’s coated. This is a big job so a really big pot helps.Measure out the powdered sugar. There’s a lot of sweetness going on in this picture. Put the sugar and the chocolate coated chex in a ziplock bag. I really like to use a 2 gallon bag if I have one on hand. If not, a 1 gallon bag works too you just may have to work with it in batches. Then zip it up and give it a shake!!That’s the part where everybody likes to help.
Then spread it all out on wax paper to cool.Once it has cooled, if you have any left, put it in an airtight container and store it in the fridge. Our pile had greatly diminished by that time!!
This is perfect to have for the holidays or anytime of the year!!

9 cups Chex cereal 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/2 cup peanut butter or sunflower seed butter
1/4 cup butter or margarine
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
In a large pot over medium heat, melt butter, chocolate chips, peanut butter or sunflower seed butter. Add vanilla and stir. Add Chex cereal and stir to coat. Measure out powdered sugar and pour into a large zip top bag. Add chocolate coated Chex and shake. Spread onto wax paper to cool. Place in an air tight container and store in the refrigerator.
