Main Dish Monday: Beef Stroganoff

It’s that time again!!  Main Dish Monday!!
I don’t know what’s gotten into me lately but I’ve been “anti cooking”.  Things have just been somewhat wild and crazy….and with the holidays quickly approaching, the craziness is just getting started.  So this post shows the messiness around Casa de Sewell.

OK…recently a friend of mine hosted a recipe swap.  I thought that was a GREAT idea!!  I always seem to get in a rut with my meal planning and make the same thing over and over until we’re tired of it.  So this was a perfect way to get some new recipes and new ideas that someone else has already tried.
So today’s main dish, Beef Stroganoff, comes from the recipe swap and my friend Maggie….well….it’s actually her mom’s recipe.  She said it was one of her family’s favorite and it was a huge hit at my house too.
I did have to adapt it a little bit once for food allergies and once again because I didn’t have one of the ingredients.
So I’ll tell you how I did it and then give you her recipe.
Start with 1 pound of ground beef, garlic powder, onion, bell pepper, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce mushrooms tomato sauce, and sour cream.Ruthie was my helper.  She LOVES to chop up mushrooms for me.Brown your beef and season with salt, pepper and garlic powder.Add in 1/2 a large onion or 1 small onion.  I used a red onion because that’s what I had on hand.  Chop 1/2 a red bell pepper…or what ever color you like.Lilly was sitting beside Ruthie acting silly!!  She’s barking like a dog here…
Once the mushrooms are chopped add them in too.Such a silly girl with a head full of crazy hair….and bubbling over with personality!!!Add one 8 ounce can of tomato sauce, hot sauce, and Worcestershire sauce.  Worcestershire sauce has fish in it….did you know that??  Yep, anchovies.  So I used a wheat free soy in it’s place for T and L.Add one cup of sour cream.It looks and smells so good in your house at this point!Cover and simmer on low for 25-30 minutes.  I did a pot of rice AND some bow tie noodles (at Ruthie’s request).  Serve it over your choice and top with Parmesan cheese.
This was so delicious!!  There were clean plates all around!!
Just thought I’d show you what my real life looks like!  😉  I had to shove all of this stuff over so we could eat at the table.


Maggie’s Beef Stroganoff
1 lb ground beef
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 large onion, chopped
1/2 large bell pepper, chopped
8 oz fresh mushrooms, chopped
1/4 tsp hot sauce like Tobasco
1 tbs Worcestershire sauce (or soy)
1 8oz can tomato sauce
1 cup sour cream
Parmesan Cheese

Brown beef, Season with salt and pepper.  Add onion, pepper and mushrooms.  Cook until veggies are tender.  Add tomato sauce and other sauces.  Add sour cream.  cover and cook on low for 25-30 minutes.  Serve over rice or pasta.  Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
