Ok y’all!! You know I LOVE all things chalkboard!! And it just keeps getting worse!! A little while back, a friend of mine posted about these CUTE chalkboard place mats that she’d seen on Pioneer Woman. Pioneer Woman got them from this cute little place HERE. LOVE THEM!!! But as you can see, you get 4 for $33 (not including shipping and handling). Once again, I’m just too frugal for that!! So, I made my own!! I made 8 of them and they cost me about $3 each and I’m rounding UP on that price!
Here’s what I started with. 11 x 14 artists canvases, 81/2 x 11 pieces of black felt, and chalkboard spray paint.
I first hot glued the felt to the back of the canvas. A spray adhesive would be FABULOUS here but hot glue was all that I had on hand.
At first, I used the spray paint and HATED it. I hated that I had to do it outside, it was too windy and I just didn’t get the coverage that I wanted. So I switched to RustOleum chalkboard paint. This is a brush on and it worked so much better!! They turned out BEAUTIFULLY!! I love the elegance that they bring (which I love black anyway).
My children love them as well!! If you don’t want to use them as place mats you could use them simply as chalkboard “slates” for school, homework, or play.
While I had the chalkboard paint out…..I know I know, I’ve gone wild with it!! But I had a cork board type bulletin board that had a pattern printed on it. I really just was not crazy about it so I painted over it with the chalkboard paint and VIOLA!! A fun addition to my kitchen!!
I came back later and added this push pin with the chalk attached.
And do you remember the chalk contact paper that I used on my dishwasher?? It is showing up everywhere around this house!! I love it on these cute little dishes for the bathroom!! The mini trifle dish and ramekin were under $2 in the kitchen section at Wal-Mart.
My husband refuses to stand still these days for fear that I will paint him with chalkboard paint or stick some sticky chalkboard paper to him. My advice to him, be afraid, be very afraid.
Who knows what I’ll chalkboard next!!
Hope y’all are having a good week!! Hugs!

Thanks so much!! Glad you stopped by!
I really like this idea! I have a lot of leftover chalkboard paint and now I know just what to do with it
Nice to meet another homeschooling mom.
Thanks so much!! LOVE your blog!!
This would be so fun at a casual dinner party with friends! You could use them as name placecards or just something for guests to doodle on during dinner.
My dad and I loved to go to restaurants where you could doodle on the table. We would play tic-tac-toe while we waited for our food. It’s such a good memory, drawing during dinner.
Love how cheap and easy it was!
ABSOLUTELY!!! We make those same restaurant memories!! I still like to doodle at the dinner table!!
Thanks for stopping by!!
VERY cute! You did a great job. I can see this idea also being great for restaurants-it would cut down on paper placemats since they could just erase it when one family leaves.
These are darling~ what a cute idea to use chalkboard paint on placemats! Would love if you would come share this at the Friday decorating party I host at my blog!
Thanks so much!! And DONE!
