A Post About Motherhood

in faith, family, kids

I’ve seen this article circling around Facebook recently.  To me it’s a really good “slap in the face” reminder of why I do what I do.  I too get tired of the idle comments from passers by about my “hands being full”.  Isn’t it a shame that I literally am told that every time I go out of this house with my 3 children who are 7, 6, and 2?  For the most part, I don’t think people are intending to be mean or discouraging but they sure aren’t trying to be helpful.  I make it my mission to be the possibly only encouraging word to new parents.  I refuse to say, “you’d better sleep now!!”  or  “you won’t be able to do that once that little one arrives”  I truly believe that these are idle words spoken by people who just don’t know what else to say.  Unfortunately they have trouble embracing a good moment of silence.

Jesus says,  “But I tell you that every careless word that people speak, they shall give an accounting for it  in the day of judgement. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” Matt. 12:36-37

My mouth will speak wisdom; And the meditation of my heart will be understanding.Psalm 49:3

Let us as mothers, be an encouragement to other mothers, new mothers, and all of those who ever come in contact with children.  Because the hand that rocks the cradle really does have the power to change the world God forbid that we relinquish that power to the culture that surrounds and allow it to change us.

Great post. I hopped on over to Desiring God to read the article and I am glad I did. I have three boys and I have also noticed that almost every single time I go out with them someone, from cashier to passerby, has to comment on how hard my life must be right now! What surprises and saddens me the most is that they say it right in front of my children. The fact that they are all boys seems to make it worse and in just one outing I may hear the remark 3-4 times . About a year ago I decided to start replying with a comment of my own that usually goes like this ” Oh, I am enjoying every minute with them. They are a joy to be around.” Most people just smile when I say it, disbelief written all over their face, but my hope is that the words make them think. Most of all I hope that my response lets my three little men know how wonderful my life is because of them…

Absolutely!! I loved how her response to the “your hands are full” comment was “yes, with good things!!” I’m going to have to make that one my own.

Totally understand! When i was pregnant we used to get tired of people telling us ” your life will never be the same ” and it was always said with a sarcastic annoying tone. It was not encouraging! I used to wonder if being a parent was so awful, how was the world still being populated!? I need to stop by and read that article.

I’m normally not an “article reader” but this one is definitely worth your time.

I have to say, I have been guilty in the past of saying careless words like that. I have a friend with a lot of beautiful blessings and it stressed me out when I thought about how hard it would be. Now I understand that God gave us unique. She is blessed with many children and I am equally blessed with two.
